this was part of the Product Shop NYC showcase during the CMJ.

It was at Studio B in Brooklyn, yes people who know me, BROOKLYN.

The Horrors' set was extremely hard to photograph as there was barely any light, at least that's my excuse.

I couldn't get my camera focused and the nerd side of me kicked in as they kept on throwing photogenic moments in my face.

One of the pictures shows two security guys on the side of the stage and this is the story: The leadsinger, Faris started to rip off the metal fence thing(whatever the technical term is) on the side as soon as he came onstage.

The management promptly sent two security guards to stand there (walking across the stage in the middle of a song) and guard the place haha.

Then Faris started to swing his mikestand-away from the audience that is, and as soon as he put it down,
the security guard took THAT away as well.
I love people.
and my writing is so not dry whatsoever. nope.

I know that it's been awhile(just in time for another NYD gig in two weeks!) since these photos were taken but better late than never.
I was fond of CBGB's not only because of its significance in NY punk movement but also because of its superb stage layout and sound quality..which is a really rare thing to come across even in New York where it has a vast number of venues...

this was my second to last CBGB's gig so more to come later.

after the set, I was running to the west side to catch Sam Roberts Band's set when some people stopped me to say hello.
I told them that I was in rush to catch my main Canadian boys' set 12879878975 miles away(seriously, why is that venue so far away) & they asked me if they are any good.
I of course started to babble on how amazing they are live,
then they asked,
"Better than The Datsuns?"
It completely baffled me.
They are both amazing live bands with very different vibes,
so I couldn't really compare them..but my point is, The Datsuns is the epitome of great live bands.
yep yep.
and yes, I'm fully aware of the fact that it's been three months since SXSW 2006.

their sets are what I look for in gigs: something that transcends everything.
It doesn't matter what I have to do two seconds after the gig ends,
it doesn't matter what I did before I stepped into the venue,
no.
not even who I am mattered.

what mattered was the "now,"
what I was witnessing at the moment,
what I was hearing at the moment,
making you forget about anything else.

amazing band at a fantastic venue.

Last night's gig at CBGB

Much to my amusement, I think my camera died. Or the memory card, I'm not really sure which yet. We'll see.

Well Dolls were fantastic(for god's sake, it was NYD at CBGB's) so despite of some people were being ridiculously rude, and having my eardrums blown off for the 2350th time, I had fun. It was a perfect way to start off a new year(I'm a year closer to death,~~wiser~~ now!)

oh and on an unrelated news: Art Brut gets excited about free clothes. So excited that they get into strangers' car. True story.

boy... ok, so everyone(well the ones who went to the show last night)'s been talking about the girl who stagedived last night during The Rakes set...she kept on trying to hop onto the stage right next to me, I just watched. This girl behind me helped her up, and off she went...to the floor. I didn't know what happened until afterwards since I didn't bother to look back. (I figured she would be crowdsurfing, but nope, NY doesn't care) I saw her after the show being supported by her friend and she was slurring out "People are laaaaamee, nobody caught me." I wisely stepped aside haha.

oh and Donny smashed a bottle of water with the microstand, making it explode right into me and the girl next to me but amazingly, I saved my camera. holla.

haha you can see me dying in the front in a few shots(one with a CAMERA of course)...it was such an utterly deafening experience (albeit fantastic) that I'm surprised how listenable/quiet this film came out to be....oh and those smoky things choke you.

SXSW day four

so yesterday WAS the final day for me, since I got some major headache from crying my eyes out while watching Almost Famous. god I love music. When I go back home tomorrow, after two more shows of similar, eh hem, decadent debauchery, I'll be so depressed. This event costed me a shitload of money, my heels are all scuffed up, possibly costed my camera as well but you know what, whatever. They are all replaceable.

Most people were so great especially when it came to my photographing, so I really thank you all for being such a nice crowd. This event was so great because you could see everyone enjoying music even if each set had a curfew. Bands enjoyed seeing their old friends, checking out some new bands, and just randomy playing outside. I mean, the atmosphere was so great that even if you didn't like the music so much, you just had a great fucking time. ..alright, let me just stop now as I'm about to cry.

Pictures are to come later today, but here is the list of bands I saw yesterday:
-Sam Champion at Emo's IV.
-The Gossip at Emo's IV
-The Giraffes at Emo's IV
-The Ark at Emo's IV
-Bad Wizard at Mrs. Bea's on the Rambler (uh, I really fucking ran after the Ark's set)
-WE at Emo's mainroom
-Preistess at Emo's
-The Datsuns at Emo's
-Sam Roberts Band at Momo's (I fucking flew over there in 10 mins)
-Ester Drang at Emo's Jr
-Nebula pt.2 at Emo's mainroom
-The Hellacopters at Emo's mainroom

The night ended with a cover of Kick Out the Jams by The Hellacopters. What more can one ask for, you know? MC555555 motherfuckers!!! hahaha.

oh and since many people asked me these questions last four days here's a little FAQ's for you:
-No, I'm not in the band (whoever "the band" is) nor with them. I just got this wristband off someone on craigslist.
-I'm not taking pictures for any publication in particular so if you see any of your pictures and want them, just let me know and I'll be glad to let you use it.
-I use Canon 20D DSLR with tamron 28-75 mm f/2.8 & canon 50 mm f/1.4(love this lens) lenses + canon 550EX with a diffuser. Funny how much credit you get just for having a big fancy equipment regardless of how shitty your pictures are. shame shame shame.
-I used to work for a publication but I don't know if I'll continue doing that. so I am kind of, sort of "in the industry"(whatever it maybe)

you know what, I've read a lot of people saying how people in Austin right now are just exaggerating the "fun" we are having, but guess what, our words, our pictures, our filmings just don't do justice how motherfucking great this event was(and is).

boy oh boy. so the guy I'm staying with offered me his car for today and I, of course, being myself, accepted the offer. WELL.

here is a list of "don't drive a car if..":
1. You only drove about 5 times in your life.
2. You are so bad at directions, in fact, you tend to forget numerical orders as well.
3. You never drove without someone sitting next to you screaming to keep your hands on the steering wheel and look at the road(instead of mirror).
4. You don't know how to pump gas(seriously, what the hell was that about)
5. You are half-deaf from all the gigs so you can't hear others honkig at you.
6. Your ID is getting corrected in other state.
7. It's not your car. You got no insurance.
8. You never drove on highways.
9. You are foreign to a place where it's being overcrowded with 12890989025 out-of-towners.

let's just say, I got home in about 30 mins(surprise!) when indeed the road only takes about 10mins, and it took me an HOUR and a HALF to get to downtown in the morning. (kind of beats the purpose of "saving time" by driving instead of taking bus)

Anyways, I saw many, many amazing bands today, from old flings to some new main men.
It was a night of a few firsts such as:
-choking on a leadsinger's hairspray about 2 ft away.
-"dancing"(using the term loosely here) to great live music while stuffing my face with rice and beans.
-ripped off my belt loop by constantly pulling it up: there is a REASON why all these skinny boys in skin-tight trousers ALWAYS wear belt with them.
-got offered some clementine at a gig.bahahaha.
-MET AN AUSTRAILIAN! (hahaha)

I'm uploading the pictures now and I don't know what I want to do with them. I have many in very HQ and I really don't like small displays. Maybe I'll upload onto my personal webaccount(finally putting it to a good use). But for now, I must empty out my camera. I took about 400 today I think, so I guess I'll post them sometime tomorrow when I'm not wondering around in the mean streets of Austin ha.

SXSW day three

I just don't get some people. and boy, was I twitching like hell at Flamingo Cantana yesterday...seriously, empty stomach + grande frappucino = disastrous. On the way home, we got pulled over some cops who were so bitter about working on the St. P's day. Really, I get into no trouble whatsoever whenever I'm jolily skipping down the street at 4 a.m. or so but no, when I'm trying to get back at 11, we get pulled over.

Anyways,
yesterday wasn't such a good show day. Not the performance-wise, but what happened in-betweens. I saw:
-Priestess at Flamingo Cantana(uh, adding the smell of free BBQ to an empty stomach + CARAMEL-ew-grande frap makes you want to die)
-Black Lamb
-The Datsuns
-random fantastic Japanese band in the street
-BBC 6 showcase at Blender bar at the Ritz
-Brakes
-The Kooks

Here's the thing about the pictures. This desktop I'm using for the internet is fast. It loaded 700 pictures in less than an hour.(yea that's fast for me) but the monitor is bit dark so I can't really see what the real density of the pictures are. BUT, I have my roomie's old(disgustingly slow) laptop with me so I resized/corrected colors(damn you red lights) a bit so I'll upload them tomorrow morning(or afternoon) when I get up.

... I think it's just getting better and better and obviously, it's reciprocal to the condition of my body.

so yesterday, it was another mostly-brit night but certain American bands I saw were just...so great.

4.Agent Sparks at Soho Lounge
5.BBC 1 showcase(I think it will be online) at Eternal:

-Boy Kill Boy
-Flaming Lips (yea um...)
-Dirty Pretty Things- uh. cut off after 10-15mins? a little deja-vu, seriously, remember the first time The Libertines played in America?

Honestly, I don't think even with the sound it will do any justice to show how truely amazing these shows were. In the end, SXSW > my sanity.

It's back after a year long hiatus. It's not going to be the same blog however; instead of dropping bits of my personal crisis here and there, this is strictly going to be a gig-related blog including my rants about sweat drenched nights and a few captured glorious moments.
